The Cork-based Polish GP at the centre of a Fitness to Practice hearing last week has been found guilty of professional misconduct for prescribing excessive amounts of tranquilisers.

However, Dr Iwona Kulczyk-Repec, will not be struck off the medical Register and will be allowed to continue to practice subject to certain conditions.

In addition to undergoing ongoing medical education and implementing a professional development plan, Dr Kulczyk-Repec will have to practice under strict Medical Council supervision over the next two years.

She said she made the prescriptions of large quantities of Xanax and Rohypnol because she had been threatened by some patients who had drug addiction problems.
