We are planning on establishing an association of doctors who commonly carry out surgical procedures in primary care, to be known as the Primary Care Surgical Association (PCSA).
We should like to invite any interested GP or other specialist doctor undertaking surgery in the community setting to contact us.
Collectively, such doctors provide a large volume, near-patient service, including the relatively simple procedures of the routine minor surgical repertoire but also more complex procedures such as such as flaps and grafts and skin cancer work.
Additionally, there is a considerable workload in vasectomy, endoscopy and superficial orthopaedic work provided in the office setting.
The following are the proposed aims and objectives of PCSA :
• To promote the provision of appropriate surgical services in primary care.
• To enhance training and accreditation.
• To facilitate and encourage audit and research.
• To provide mutual professional support and clinical discussion.
• To collaborate with other professional bodies on standard setting and clinical guidance.
• To promote the business case for primary care surgery with purchasers.
The new association will likely develop links with the UK Association of Surgeons in Primary Care, which provides a similar focus in the UK and which is affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons in Britain and Ireland.
We feel that GPs and other specialists who undertake primary care surgery in Ireland need a collegiate nexus around which the highest standards of cost effective, appropriate, communitybased surgery can be developed and supported.
The inaugural meeting of the PCSA will take place at the Carlton Castletroy Hotel in Limerick on Saturday April 21 2012.
We should like, through your publication to invite interested colleagues to volunteer in the organisation of this event or to register for attendance, by contacting us.
